Days are getting longer, light is returning to the apartment — and with it, a clear realisation: there are too many things here. Skis at the back of the hallway, down jackets piled on the top shelf, the children's sledge with nowhere to go. The transition from winter to the sunny season is the ideal time to make space. And for everything you are not throwing away but will not use for six months, a storage unit is the simplest solution.

The big spring inventory

Before filling a unit, start by sorting. Room by room, make three piles: what stays, what goes (donation, sale, recycling centre), and what goes into storage. Usually, the "storage" pile contains:

  • Winter equipment: skis, poles, boots, snowshoes, sledge, snow chains
  • Off-season clothing: down jackets, coats, thick jumpers, boots
  • Seasonal furniture: thick duvets, blankets, portable heaters
  • "One day maybe" items: Christmas decoration boxes, souvenirs, winter leisure equipment

All of this takes up space at home for six months without being used. By storing it, you recover a cupboard, part of your cellar, or simply room to breathe.

A small unit is often enough

Good news: for seasonal storage, you generally do not need a large space. A unit of 1.5 to 2 m³ — the equivalent of a large cupboard — easily accommodates a pair of skis, two suitcases of clothes, a few boxes and one or two bulky items. At C-BOX, this represents a budget from CHF 55 per month, with no commitment beyond one month. You store for the season, retrieve your belongings in autumn, and you are done.

Prepare your belongings properly before storage

A few simple steps to find your belongings in good condition in autumn:

  • Clean and dry everything you store, especially clothing and sports equipment. Residual moisture is the enemy of long-term storage.
  • Use covers for clothing and duvets. Avoid sealed plastic bags that prevent ventilation.
  • Label your boxes clearly. In October, you will not want to open everything to find your gloves.
  • Place frequently used items at the front. If you need to retrieve something during the season, it should be accessible without moving everything else.

Enjoy your reclaimed space

What our clients tell us most often is not "thank you for the unit". It is "I got my entrance back", or "my cellar is finally usable", or "the children have room to play". External storage is above all a gain in quality of life at home. And when the sunny season arrives, that extra space changes everything: a clear balcony, a garage where you can park the car, a room that becomes a room again.
